UL - A Global Leader Helping Manufacturers Access Worldwide Markets
For 105 years, Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL) has been the undisputed leader in product safety testing and certification. UL has a presence in almost every major market through its global network of subsidiaries, affiliates, representative offices and reciprocal agreements. Working within the conformity assessment systems, business practices and cultures of its host countries, UL is in the unique position to help facilitate trade for customers no matter where they are located, and no matter where they want to market their products or services. What's more, UL's participation in the IECEE CB Scheme has helped build global expertise and capabilities. As an active participant in the CB Scheme, UL can help manufacturers obtain national product safety certifications in more than 30 countries in North America, Europe, Asia and Africa. As a National Certification Body (NCB) for the United States, UL can evaluate manufacturers' information technology and business equipment to IEC 950, medical products to IEC 601, household audio/video equipment to IEC 65, automatic electric controls to IEC 730, handheld electric tools to IEC 745, thermal links to IEC 691, and laboratory and measuring equipment to IEC 1010, and any national differences. Then, UL issues a CB Test Certificate and CB Test Report that manufacturers can use to obtain national certifications in participating countries. Though considered a relative newcomer to the CB Scheme -- UL became an NCB in 1992 -- through strategic promotion and active involvement, UL has become a prominent organization within the CB Scheme. In 1999 UL issued more than 1100 CB Test Certificates through the CB Scheme, ranking among the top three in the world among all the national certification bodies participating for the year. In summary, by submitting a product to UL at one of it many locations around the world, a manufacturer can gain various types of certifications leading to product acceptance not only for the U.S. market, but for markets throughout North America, South America, Europe, Asia and the Pacific Rim. With its extensive and rapidly growing network of certification pathways, UL will continue to deliver to customers an unsurpassed level of product acceptance necessary to compete in the global marketplace.
